UN WHO field trials on Bayer CropScience’s insecticidal mosquito net, LifeNet, have confirmed that it exceeds the requirement of effectiveness after 20 washes. Tests in Tanzania, Benin and India showed that LifeNet was effective after 30 washes, with regeneration after washing within one day, Bayer points out. LifeNet incorporates the pyrethroid insecticide, deltamethrin, in polypropylene fibres. The UN WHO issued an interim recommendation earlier this year (Agrow No 615, p 28).
Argentine authorities are to carry out and finance trials of pesticides on minor crops. The active ingredients to be trialled are among those that have not been approved for use on such crops. The national animal and plant health inspection service, the Senasa, has agreed terms on a deal with the Argentine university the Universidad de Buenos Aires, to implement a series of actions required to initiate efficacy and residue trials. The US agrochemical company, Gowan (Yuma, Arizona), has received approval for its fungicide, Gavel 75DF (zoxamide 8.3% + mancozeb 66.7%), in the state of California. It is for the control of late blight (Phytophthora infestans) and downy mildew on potatoes, tomatoes, grapevines and cucurbits. Gowan acquired the zoxamide business from Dow AgroSciences in 2008 (Agrow No 548, p 1). Gavel has been registered in other parts of the US since 2001.
The ISO Technical Committee on Common Names for Pesticides has provisionally approved three new active ingredient names. Bayer CropScience’s insecticide, flupyradifurone, is being developed under the code name, BYI02960, according to the Compendium of Pesticide Common Names (CPCN). Bayer’s triazinylsulfonylurea herbicide, iofensulfuron, will be sold as the sodium salt, iofensulfuron-sodium (BCS-AA10579). Several US lawsuits have been filed against DuPont over alleged damage to trees caused by its new herbicide, Imprelis (aminocyclopyrachlor). An Ohio law firm, Neblett, Beard and Arsenault has filed a class action suit against DuPont on behalf of those who claim to have suffered extensive damage to their trees, lawns and gardens after the use of Imprelis. Brazilian joint venture Iharabras has launched the first fungicidal seed treatment for the control of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. It has introduced the suspension concentrate formulation, Certeza (thiophanate-methyl + fluazinam), this month for use on soybeans and kidney beans. Syngenta has entered into an agreement with the Canadian company, Innovotech (Edmonton, Alberta), to conduct trials on Innovotech’s bactericidal seed treatment, Agress (oxysilver nitrate), in North America. Innovotech conducted commercial-scale trials of the product in Canada last year (Agrow No 571, p 24). It is aimed at the control of bean blight (Xanthomonas campestris pv phaseoli) on beans, peas and soybeans.
